Protamine Sulfate Clinical Use

Reversal of Heparin Anticoagulation: Protamine sulfate is used during or after surgeries and medical procedures where heparin has been administered to prevent blood clotting. It is especially useful in cardiac surgeries, vascular surgeries, and dialysis.

Dosage: The dose of protamine sulfate depends on the amount of heparin to be neutralized. Typically, 1 mg of protamine sulfate is used to neutralize 100 units of heparin.

Administration and Precautions

Intravenous Administration: Protamine sulfate is administered via slow intravenous injection to avoid adverse reactions.

Adverse Effects: While generally effective, protamine sulfate can cause side effects such as allergic reactions, hypotension, bradycardia, and, rarely, anaphylaxis. It is important to administer it slowly to minimize these risks.

Overdose Risk: Excessive protamine sulfate can have anticoagulant effects of its own, so careful calculation of the dose is necessary.
